Since 2018, I’ve functioned as a sessional consultant at Tygerberg Hospital’s clinical sub-specialty unit, a recognised local centre of excellence, hosting SAOA accredited international limb reconstruction fellowship.
Prof Ferreira’s unit performs 200 – 250 procedures a year focussing on Advanced trauma, primary bone tumours and metastatic disease, chronic osteomyelitis and deformity correction.
Specific functions in the unit:
- Consults and assists surgeons with complicated clinical cases at government and private hospitals.
- Producing and coordinating research papers on chronic osteomyelitis and limb reconstruction.
- Acting as faculty on training courses on the use of the Orthofix TLHex fixation system in deformity correction at Tygerberg and at CURE Hospital in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
- Introduced the use of 3D Printed anatomical models of patient imaging as a tool in the preparation and planning of complex cases and administration of the 3D Printing lab.
- Support the training of the Limb Reconstruction Fellows passing through the unit.
- Regularly presenting at the Departmental Academic meetings.
- Consults and assists surgeons with complicated clinical cases at government and private hospitals.
